Information about Egyptian Ports

Egypt's geographical location lends an important aspect to the maritime transport sector. Overlooking both the Mediterranean and Red seas linked by the Suez Canal; Egypt realized its role at an international level. The government overplayed the infra structure of a great maritime industry by building ports and supplying them with high tech. equipments to handle cargoes and passengers.
There are 41 ports in Egypt divided into Commercial, Ore, Petroleum, Fishing and Tourist ports.
Among the most important ports are Alexandria which is the biggest port in Egypt, Dekheila Port which is a natural extend to Alexandria Port. Damietta Port which has the largest container terminal and most sophisticated equipments in the Middle East, and Port Said and Suez at both ends of the Suez canal.
It is historically recorded in 1874 B.C., Egypt was the first country to dig a man-made canal across its lands to link the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea via the Nile River and its branches. That Canal was abandoned and reopened several times then later named "The Suez canal". It was opened for international navigation on 17 November 1869 A.D.

We are always at your services when-ever you request us .

suez canal

The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea and extends for a total length of 192 kilometres. The Mediterranean entrance is situated at Port Said and the Red Sea entrance at Suez Port.

There is no restriction on the length of a vessel, max airdraught is 68 meters, max beam is 70.1 meters and max draught is 17.07 meters. The beam and draught dimensions can vary as the Canal Authority operates a breadth and draught table. The Canal is dredged to a depth of 19.5-20 meters.

The canal operates a lock-free transit system with passage by convoy, 2 southbound and 1 northbound daily, max 40 vessels per convoy with an average transit time of 14 hours.

It is recorded that Egypt was the first country to dig a canal across its land with a view to activate world trade.

The first canal was dug under the reign of SENAUSRET III, Pharao of Egypt (1887-1849 BC) linking the Mediterranean Sea in the north with the Red sea in the south via the river Nile and its branches.

The Canal often abandoned to silting and was successfully reopened to navigation by SITY I (1310 BC), NKHAW (610 BC), Persian King DARIUSSLI POLEMY II (285 BC), Emperor TRAJAN (117 AD) and AMRO IBN ELASS, following the Islamic conquest.

In modern times the Suez Canal is actually the first canal directly linking the Mediterranean to the Red sea.

Excavation of the present Canal begun on April 25, 1859 and was opened for international navigation on November 17, 1869. The Canal has been closed five times.

The longest period of closure was following the 1967 war, when the canal was closed during 8 years. The Canal was reopened for navigation on June 5, 1975.

United

We are pleased to introduce United organization in Port Said.
United proved its efficiency during the construction of the Suez Canal, thus starting a long history of first class shipping services in Egypt.
United is today a leader in the field of the Suez Canal transit.

The idea of linking the Mediterranean and
Red sea first occurred during the Pharaonic age.
suez canal

During the French campaign of 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte thought of linking the two seas directly by means of a navigation canal, but engineers did not support the idea of believing that the Red Sea level is nine meters higher than that of the Mediterranean.

  • On November 30, 1854 the French engineer Ferdinand De-lesseps managed to sign a concession with the Egyptian government to dig the Suez Canal.

  • On April 25, 1859 the digging of the Canal began and continued for ten years. More than 2.4 million Egyptian workers took part, of which more than 125.000 lost their lives.

  • On November 17,1869 the Suez Canal was opened for navigation.

  • The Suez Canal has a strategic location. It links two oceans and two seas

  • In July 1956, Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal after it had been an international company for about 87 years.

  • The Egyptian government has always been keen on improving and developing the performance of the Suez Canal in order to cope with the steady increase in maritime transport due to the huge capacity of tankers, giant cargo vessels and the ever increasing number of ships crossing the canal
